Woodmere Design: The Heart of The Matter

The creative process is continual at Woodmere. Even when we are re-producing designs of yesteryear, a great deal of designwork has to take place to insure museum quality reproduction. This design precision can only be accomplished with years of experience in both design and porcelain production.

This same design expertise allows Woodmere to create custom china and giftware designs for some of America's most discriminating clients. Woodmere is proud to work with such customers as The White House, The U.S. Department of State, and Mount Vernon among others. We also are designers of personalized china for many of our country's upscale restaurants, hotels, and clubs. When considering custom products for your organization, why not take advantage of Woodmere's expertise and experience to create something truly unique and personal. And, if you are interested in custom yacht china, custom china for your aircraft, or simply custom china for your home, Woodmere does that as well.

Give Debbie a call at 1-800-345-0332 and she would be happy to discuss how to get started.

First Ladies Library Christmas 2007 Plate

Woodmere Colors: Making Them from Scratch

With all the color it uses in its designs, Woodmere has to be an expert in the world of color. Our color experts have many years of experience in knowing how to come up with just the right recipes to produce the right color in both its decals and its hand lining. What most people do not realize is that color is comes to use in "dirt-like" form and is organic, therefore it is always unique and changing. Our color experts have to make the necessary adjustments to insure color consistency. To us, it is a little like making a cake where the ingredients sometimes are changing!

This picture shows the initial color ingredients to begin making the yellow color in the Grant border from our White House Collection. Notice the hint of red being added to the yellow to give the Grant yellow rim decal just the "right" hue.

Woodmere's Titanic VIP/First Class China

In the coming months, expect to see new items added to Woodmere's reproductions of Titanic VIP/First Class china. This ever popular china design continues in strong demand and we look forward to adding items. However, as you must know by now, product development takes time to get high quality reproductions......therefore, look for these new additions in the spring of '08.

In the menatime, if you would like to check out our existing range of Titanic china, I think you will find it is already quite extensive.

Simply click on this link to find out more:

How we do it.....

....ever wonder how those lines actually find their way onto the edge or the rim of the plate?

Well, talented Woodmere artisans painstakingly apply them by hand. Obviously, the skills involved to be able to hand line a plate or any other item are extensive - starting with a steady hand.

By the way, the color being applied is....gold! Doesn't look like gold does it? Trust us, when this plate is fired in our kilns and fused onto the plate, a brilliant, durable gold line will appear.

Today, November 18th.....

.... in 1865, Mark Twain, author of Woodmere's American Maxim shown below, published the "Celebrated Jumping Frog of Calaveras County" - he was 30 years old at the time.
Samuel Langhorne Clemens, known as Mark Twain, would go on and entertain Americans with his literary wit until his death in 1910. His best known works were The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn and The Adventures of Tom Sawyer. The portrait shown at right is the last one ever painted of him.

What we do.....

We, here at Woodmere China, often get asked about how we make our products and are they really made here in Pennsylvania. We do, in fact, make all our products here at our studio in New Castle, Pennsylvania. Our products are all designed and produced by our employees and are hand decorated. Most of our decoration is done with decals - yes, we design and produce those, too! - and these decals are applied by hand. If you look closely at some of our more complicated White House china, Titanic china, or custom china designs....you will begin to understand and get a sense for how exacting and complex decorating them can be!

In the coming weeks, we will attempt to show you the various stages we go through in bringing a product from the intial concept to becoming a finished product ready for shipment. I think you will find it interesting....I know we do.

Today, November 15th....

....in 1939, President Franklin D. Roosevelt laid the cornerstone for the Jefferson Memorial in Washington, DC.

Stay tuned....we'll soon be showing you the custom dinnerware that we are re-creating for an antique yacht! It is in production and looks fabulous!

Woodmere Ornaments: An American Holiday Treat

Holidays are a great time for theme decorating and what better theme than one that remembers our country’s heritage? Whether it is an American historical, colonial, patriotic or even a presidential theme, Woodmere ornaments make the perfect design compliment.
The 3 inch ball ornaments in both the E Pluribus Unum (‘from many into one’) and The Great Seal of The United States designs are the perfect “all-American” accent decoration for many holidays. Gift boxed, they also make excellent holiday gifts, as well.

Since Woodmere began producing ornaments several years ago, they have expanded the number available and found that consumers use them in unique ways….often on a year-round basis. “It’s not unusual to find customers hanging Woodmere’s White House Collection ornaments at various times of the year, especially over the President’s Day holiday in February, We even have some customers who display them all year round in small display cases” commented Woodmere’s Beth Cwynar.

Woodmere Custom Designed China & Giftware

Many people who know the Woodmere name are not aware that Woodmere creates custom china and giftware for many discerning clients. The company has created custom designs for clients such as U.S. Department of State, Mount Vernon, and many of our country's top restaurants and hotels. When Emeril Lagasse, one of the best known chef personalities in the U.S., was looking for someone to create his signature showplates, he chose Woodmere. “It’s not unusual for people who understand the creative process, such as Emeril to ask us to do creative work for them,” comments Woodmere’s General Manager Tracy McElrath. “Our approach to creating custom china is similar to a chef’s approach to creating dishes for a menu. Starting with the end in mind, Woodmere creates and executes designs that appeal to the senses and also is practical in its application.”

Woodmere has created custom showplates for restaurateurs since the company was founded some 30+ years ago. By working closely with clients and controlling the production process internally—from design, to decal production, to hand decorating, to kiln firing—Woodmere handles the complete process.

And, it’s all done here in the U.S. by people who truly understand the custom designed dinnerware and giftware business. So, the next time you are thinking of doing a custom designed dinnerware or gftware item, contact Woodmere - either through our website http://www.woodmerechina.com/ or give us a call at 1-800-345-0332.
